The Malthouse Project |
The building at one time was used as a maltings and there is evidence throughout of original features and artefacts, which can be seen today. The Heritage Centre offers a variety of historical resources, including artefacts dating back to the 1600s, a model of the malting process and a photographic exhibition of the restoration project. Since completion, the Project has received two architectural awards for the intricate use of combining old and new materials. Oak beams, wooden floorboards and tiles are all original features that blend with the new oak beams and doors making it the award-winning building that it is today.
The café, situated in the old kiln room, provides a charming setting to relax and enjoy fine food and a range of hot and cold drinks. The chef’s special is the malthouse loaf!
The Malthouse Project is publicly funded and is run by St Matthew Housing, a charity for the homeless. Registered charity no. 266521.
