The festive season is upon us! Across Bury St Edmunds & Beyond there are plenty of Christmas events for you to enjoy; with everything from craft fairs and markets, to concerts, parties and pantomime!

Our Christmas 'What's On' guide has all you need to know to plan your festive calendar!


The Wonder of Christmas at Blackthorpe Barn - Every weekend until 22nd December 

Every year, for many years, the heavy oak doors of Blackthorpe Barn have been opened to present the most wonderful Christmas festival. This year is no exception, with a country Christmas shop, crafts and workshops. You can also buy your real Christmas tree, Christmas wreath and natural decorations, pay a visit to Father Christmas, indulge in some festive treats in the cafe and take in the stunning Suffolk scenery on a walk around the grounds.

Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre - 22nd - 25th November

One of the highlights in Bury St Edmund's festive calendar, the Christmas Fayre takes place over 4 days with the region's top food & drink producers, crafts people and Christmas stalls filling  The Athenaeum, St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Angel Hill and the streets of the historic town.

In the beautiful Abbey Gardens you’ll find a magical atmosphere with over 100 stalls, free children’s entertainment, Santa’s Grotto, real reindeer and lots of delicious food and drink to feast upon too. 

The popular Ice Cookery Theatre will be hosting festive demonstrations in the Cathedral Courtyard, plus there will be regular carol concerts inside the Cathedral throughout the weekend - the perfect way to kick start the festive season!

Sudbury Christmas Fair & Christmas Light Switch On - 23rd November

Sudbury Town Centre Christmas will lighting up and kick starting the festive season with a Christmas Fair, funfair rides and games, Santa's grotto, craft fair and food stalls.

There will be mulled wine and mince pies a'plenty, as well as performers, live music and an ice skating rink!

Christmas Wreath Making Workshop - Ickworth House 23rd - 25th November

Head to Ickworth House and make your own stunning Christmas wreath with with greenery from the Ickworth Estate. You will be shown how to make the wreath by the Outdoors Team before making your own festive creation for your front foor.

Elf Toy Making Workshop - 24th & 25th November

If you're coming to Bury St Edmunds for the Christmas Fayre, then make sure you take your children along to The Guildhall's Elf Workshop!

Children will love making their own traditional toys and decorations with help from Santa's workshop elves. Each workshop is 30 minutes and costs just £8 per child. 

Recommended for children aged 5-10 years.

Candlelit Cathedral Tour - 30th November

A truly magical way to mark Christmas, head to St Edmundsbury Cathedral for a magical Candlelit Cathedral Tour with their Cathedral Guides on Friday 30 November at 7pm.

Sleeping Beauty 30th November - 13th January

It's panto time! On no it isn't! Oh yes it is! Performed at Bury St Edmund's Theatre Royal from the 30th November to 13th January, Sleeping Beauty is the perfect festive treat for the whole family. 

You will be whisked away to the medieval kingdom of Burytonia for magic, mayhem and more. You’ll meet jousting knights, mythical beasts and take a journey beneath the earth. Most importantly you’ll discover if love really can conquer all.

Clare Christmas Fair - 30th November - 1st December

With over 60 exhibitors selling festive food, drinks and a great selection of gifts, this Christmas event in Clare is not to be missed!

There's plenty to see and do, with a wide selection of stalls, live music and carols, stilt walkers, Hells Bells Alternative Morris Dancers, a raffle, waffles, chestnuts, mulled wine and Prosecco, Punch and Judy, face painting, magic, the Snow Queen, a fairground ride, a Salvation Army brass band and Father Christmas and his reindeer!

The fair starts on Friday 30th November in the atmospheric candlelit church and on Saturday evening, the Christmas Lights Switch-On will take place.

BBC Radio Suffolk Carol Concert - 1st December

Join Pudsey and friends for BBC Radio Suffolk's annual festive concert, featuring Stowmarket Chorale, Long Melford Silver Band, Izzy's Daughter, Terry Waite CBE, the combined voices of St Mary's, Bury St Edmunds, children's choir and St Edmundsbury Cathedral Choristers and audience carols.

The evening's concert will then be broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk on Christmas Day, tickets are £15 plus a £1 booking fee.

Meet Santa and his Elves at The Arc - 1st December - 24th December

Santa and his elves will be bringing festive cheer to Bury St Edmunds in their Grotto at The Arc Shopping Centre in Charter Square Bury St Edmunds from 11am - 5pm from 1st-24th December.

A number of places will be available to buy on the day, but to avoid disappointment tickets can be booked in advance.

Wreath Making Workshop at Bury St Edmunds Guildhall - 2nd December

Spend a morning in the beautiful Bury St Edmunds Guildhall preparing your very own Christmas Wreath with natural materials. The event is recommended for adults with tickets costing £12 per person. Tickets are available from The Apex box office at https://www.theapex.co.uk/.


Thea Gilmore Christmas Party Tour - 3rd December

One of the finest singer-songwriters of her generation, Thea Gilmore will be gracing the stage at The Apex. Thea's 2018 acoustic Christmas Party UK tour will feature material from ‘Strange Communion’, laced liberally with the occasional diverse, highly individual versions of a Christmas classic. Enjoy the superb musicianship always on display from Thea’s band and at the heart of the show - Thea's spine-tingling, pure-toned voice, guaranteed to leave you moved, exhilarated and spellbound.

Carols from Cambridge - 4th December 

Listen to festive favourites from Selwyn College Choir conducted by Sarah McDonald in the stunning surroundings of St Mary's Church in Bury St Edmunds. 

This ever-popular annual carol concert set includes seasonal favourites to get you in the festive mood, sung by the euphonious voices of the choristers of the Selwyn College Chapel Choir. Book early to avoid disappointment!

Festive Wreath Making Afternoon Tea - 5th December

Sit back, relax, and enjoy afternoon tea as you take part in this festive wreath making workshop at The Northgate hosted by Amelia Cornish, founder of Amelia Corninsh Floral Designs.

Amelia will work with you to create your own wreath using a combination of fresh foliage, dried fruit & berries. You will then be treated to one of The Northgate's delicious afternoon teas - the perfect end to your morning.

Sudbury Christmas Tree Festival - 5th - 9th December

Sudbury's annual Christmas Tree Festival fills St. Peter's Church in the town centre for 5 days from 5th - 9th December with 100 individually decorated Christmas trees, all conveying different meaningful messages. Admission is just £1 with under 12s going free - all proceeds go to good causes in the local community.

Lavenham Christmas Fair - 7th - 9th December

A seasonal feast for the senses, there will be music and entertainment for all the family, as well as craft and food stalls selling all manner of seasonal goodies – all set amid the magical backdrop of Lavenham’s historic Market Place.

With food, live entertainment and shopping plus Father Christmas in his grotto, a children's funfair, wine bar, hog roast and mulled wine, Morris dancing and a carol concert.

Concert of Carols - 8th December

Soak up the festive atmosphere and enjoy an evening of carols at St Mary's Church in Bury St Edmunds featuring RAF Honington Voluntary Band accompanied by The Combined Military Wives Choirs of Wattisham Air Station, RAF Honington and RAF Marham.

Dickensian Christmas at Kentwell - 8th & 9th, 15th & 16th December

Kentwell Hall's Dickensian Christmas is a wonderful day out for the whole family. Meet the Victorian household including the family and staff, the Victorian villagers, watch Mr Dickens present 'A Christmas Carol', visit the Music Hall, watch a magic show, peruse the craft stalls and Victorian Tavern, meet Father Christmas himself and at the end of each day listen to carols by lantern light.

A Baroque Christmas at The Guildhall - 9th December & 19th December

Listen to the stunning Eboracum Baroque in concert at the historic Bury St Edmunds Guildhall on the 9th and 19th December as they will perform a festive programme of music including works by Scarlatti, Charpentier, Vivaldi and Telemann.

Hear lively dance arrangements of French carols from the court of Louis XIV, pastoral Venetian music conjuring up a frosty winter landscape and festive arias for soprano and trumpet rejoicing in celebration at the birth of the new born child in Bethlehem.

A wonderful setting for a concert full of seasonal cheer! Tickets are £16.50 for adults and £5.50 for children.

The Lock In Christmas Carol - 10th December

Half gig, half dance show and half panto!

Christmas Gala Dinner at Hengrave Hall - 11th December

A Christmas Carol with Simon Callow - Cinema Screening

Snuggle up with a bucket of popcorn and get into the festive spirit at Abbeygate Cinema watching one of Christmas' favourite tales 'A Christmas Carol'. 

Based on Dickens' own performance adaptation, Simon Callow and director-designer Tom Cairns have created a one-man theatrical extravaganza of festive story-telling that is both heart-warming and deeply moving. A Christmas must see!

An Evening of Eric and Ern at Christmas - 13th December

From the Olivier nominated duo behind the hugely celebrated and critically acclaimed West End hit Eric & Little Ern is coming to The Apex. This is a brilliant homage crammed full of renditions of those famous comedy sketches, that hits all the right notes! 

From Greig's Piano Concerto to Mr Memory, "Arsenal!", it’s a show full of Morecambe and Wise's most loved routines, songs and sketches and of course a musical guest. This wonderful show evokes memories of times when whole families would huddle around the telly to watch those fantastic Christmas specials. You'll feel you've experienced the real thing and been taken back to a world of sunshine and laughter.

Santa's Grotto at Field of Dreams Farm - 15th December

Visit Santa in his grotto at the Field of Dreams Farm! Children will receive a special gift, and can make Christmas cards and fabulous tree decorations.The amazing Fleur will also be starring as Santa's reindeer!

Refreshments can be bought at the farm along with Christmas trees, gifts and stocking fillers.

Father Christmas at Moyse's Hall - 15th & 16th, 22nd December

Meet Father Christmas at Moyse's Hall Museum in his traditional Grotto! Tell him your wishes for Christmas, receive a gift and have a photo taken by one of his friendly elves before he heads off for his busiest day of the year!

Jazz at The Movies: A Swinging Christmas - 19th December

Jazz at the Movies return to The Apex for their fifth consecutive Swinging Christmas at The Apex. Refreshed and revitalised for 2018, this joyous show gets jazzy with a stocking-full of 20th century holiday classics and curiosities.

With a reputation for vivid music, deep repertoire and droll presentation, Jazz at the Movies and A Swinging Christmas is the perfect way to begin the festivities. Featuring Joanna Eden (acclaimed vocalist, star judge of BBC’s 'All Together Now' and longtime teacher/mentor to pop superstar Sam Smith) and the Chris Ingham Quartet, featuring woodwind star of the world-renowned John Wilson Orchestra - Mark Crooks.
