School's Out for Summer!

The summer holidays are here! Whether you're here on holiday or visiting for the day, there's plenty to keep the kids entertained in Bury St Edmunds & Beyond!

We've picked out our favourite family-friendly events taking place over the summer holidays!

27th & 28th July - British Firefighter Challenge

The annual firefighter challenge comes to you from The Apex in the centre of Bury St Edmunds. See firefighters pushed to their limits from 9am - 6pm - a great day of entertainment raising money for the Firefighters Charity. 

28th July - There's a Head in my Bed

The legend of St Edmund is brought to life at The Apex - this storytelling and craft event is perfect for children aged 3-7. Local author Hatty Ashton will guide silly Saxons and valiant Vikings on an hour-long adventure from 12.30pm. £13 per child. 

4th August - The Hall at War

WWI, Tudors and WWII combine to illustrate the impact of war on the inhabitants of Kentwell. Sixty of Kentwell Hall's volunteers will be taking part across the three eras portrayed. 

The 'Family' in the Hall will be entertaining their guests, tended to by their staff and if weather permits, there may even be a game or two of lawn bowls, or some cricket after luncheon. At the Butts, you will find our Tudor archers demonstrating and explaining longbow archery and associated crafts at the Butts. They will be shooting against each other in various competitions across the weekend.

The house, gardens and farm will also be open all weekend as well as the tearooms for lunch and refreshments.

10th August - The Railway Children

An unmissable theatre experience taking place in the Abbey Gardens, find your travel companions and take your seats (bring your seats actually, and a picnic) at 6pm in the Abbey Gardens, Bury St Edmunds for Heartbreak Productions’ outdoor adaptation of The Railway Children, a classic children’s tale by Edith Nesbit. 

Join Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis on platform one as they pass the time by sharing the classic tale of The Railway Children. 

18th & 19th August - Summer Fete at Field of Dreams

The Field of Dreams Farm has teamed up with charity TeiganSmile for a fabulous weekend of entertainment including live bands, face painting, stalls, bouncy castle, licensed bar, hot food, raffle, donkey rides, petting zoo and much more. 

Entry is just £1 per adult and children under 16 are free!

25th - 27th August - Vikings Come to West Stow

Coming to West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village this summer - Meet members of Jorvik Vikingr as they occupy the Village and show you their daily life and skills. Listen to their stories and sagas, enjoy craft demonstrations and maybe even have a chance to see their weapons and find out about more about Viking combat skills! The event runs from 10am - 5pm both days.

28th August - Lavenham Classics

The pretty village of Lavenham will be taken over by veteran, vintage, classic, supercars and motor cycles at the Lavenham Classics event - accompanied by a fantastic selection of food and drink stalls too!

All profits from the event go to local charities and this year half of all profits will go to the East Anglian Air Ambulance with the remainder for distribution via the Lavenham Community Council. The event runs from 11am - 4pm. 

26th & 27th August - Bury St Edmunds Food & Drink Festival

Foodies will love the two day Bury St Edmunds Food and Drink Festival held on August Bank Holiday weekend. 

With an annual line-up of cooking demonstrations from top celebrity chefs, the chance to taste and purchase food and drink from over 100 stalls and a popular farmer’s market, this is a foodie’s heaven. 

There’s also lots to keep the children occupied with the ever popular man-made beach, fairground rides, street entertainment, and a mini farm.

28th August - The Midnight Gang

Head to the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds for this live performance of David Walliam's 'The Midnight Gang'. 

When everyone else is sleeping, The Midnight Gang gathers in the name of magic, mischief, and memory making. Join the gang on this crucial mission to overcome our greatest fears and uncover the magic ingredient to a fantastic friendship. 

Tickets are £12 for adults and £10 for concessions. There are two performances, at 2pm and 6pm.

2nd September - Classic and Sports Cars by the Lake

Head the the village of Fornham St Martin, as more than 5,000 people come together to celebrate their passion for motoring! The event features pre-war, post-war, modern and replica classic cars and stunning motor bikes on display by both regional car clubs and private owners, all exhibiting their vehicles for the general public and a 20-strong team of judges to view and enjoy.

Alongside them are many local motoring companies and a huge range of exciting local food and drink companies supplying a full range of culinary delights from gourmet burgers to Chinese duck wraps, cold beers and craft ales to traditional ice creams, ensuring the event is a huge success for a great family day out. The event runs from 11am - 4.30pm. 

9th September - Milkshake Live!

The Magic Storybook stars Milkshake! favourites including Bob the Builder, Peppa Pig, Little Princess, Noddy, Fireman Sam, Shimmer & Shine and many more as they take audiences on a journey through the world's favourite fairytales at The Apex.

With two performances at 12pm and 3.30pm, tickets are £15 for adults, £13.50 for under 16s and children under 2 are free when sitting on laps (only in the stalls), a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) is £53. 

Visiting Bury St Edmunds this summer? Why not make a stay of it!
