Suffolk Walking Festival Comes to Bury St Edmunds and Beyond!

The Suffolk Walking Festival takes places from 12th May - 3rd June, with over 120 walks it promises to be bigger and better than ever!

This year's Suffolk Walking Festival boasts over 120 walks; with everything from Dawn Chorus Walks, Nordic Walking, GeoCaching, historical guided walks, walking quizzes and relaxing rambles. 

We've rounded up the fantastic variety of walks that are taking place in Bury St Edmunds and Beyond; so whether you're a local looking to explore or a visitor wanting to discover our beautiful county, there's a walk for you!

Nordic Walking Taster Session - West Stow Country Park

When: 12th May, 11am - 12pm

Where: West Stow Country Park, Icklingham Road, West Stow, Bury St Edmunds, IP28 6HG

Discover the benefits of Nordic Walkins; how light you feel on your feet and how your whole body is mobilised. The circular walk around West Stow Country Park is 3 miles long and costs £8 per person.

Lavenham Blue 

When: 13th May, 2.30pm - 4.30pm & 1st June, 10.30am - 12.30pm

Where: Lavenham Tourist Information Centre, Lady St, Lavenham, Sudbury, CO10 9RA

This guided 1 mile walk is a relaxing stroll around the medieval and Tudor streets of Lavenham, where you can learn about the picturesque Suffolk village's fascinating past for just £3 per person!

Wool Towns - Long Melford to Clare via the Stour Valley Path

When: 13th May, 9.30am - 12.30pm

Where: The Green, Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford, CO10 9DT

Discover the beautiful Stour Valley with this 9-mile linear walk (transportation is provided back to Long Melford). Starting on The Green by Long Melford Church, you will make your way through the grounds of Kentwell Hall into Kentwell Downs, crossing the River Glem into Glemsford, through Cavendish and finishing in Clare. Refreshments are provided at the end of the walk in Clare too with tickets costing £6 per person.

Explore Nowton Park

When: 14th May & 21st May, 24th - 28th May, 10am - 11.30am, 

Location: Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds IP29 5LU

Enjoy a 2-3 mile circular walk, led by a Health Walk leader around the award-winning Nowton Park and the surrounding bridleways and footpaths leading to Hardwick Park before returning to Nowton. This walk is free of charge, but parking at Nowton Park is £2.

Walk and Workout for All

When: 15th May, 10am - 11am

Location: Bury Leisure Centre, Beetons Way, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3TT

This 1.5 mile walk is free of charge and a great way to work out in the great outdoors! The exercises will give your body a complete toning session, but you could get a bit muddy so a change of clothes is advisable! 

Guided Walk Around Clare

When: 17th May, 25th May, 3rd June 10.30am - 12.30pm

Location: Clare Castle Country Park, Malting Lane, Clare, CO10 8NW

A 2.5 mile walk around Clare; Clare Castle and Country Park, Market Hill, Parish Church, Common, Clare Priory, listed medieval buildings and the Ancient House Museum. Your £4 ticket includes entry to the Ancient House Museum.

History & Heritage Walk at the Home of Horse Racing 

When: 19th May, 9am - 11am

Location: The Bill Tutte Memorial Statue, 5 Palace Street, Newmarket, CB8 8EP

A historic walking tour where you can discover the history of Newmarket from the time of King James I to the present day. Visit many of the town’s main attractions such as the newly opened National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art and the world famous Tattersalls Auction House. Tickets are £12 per person.

What did the railway do for Lavenham?

When: 21st May, 2pm - 4pm

Where: Church of St Peter and St Paul, Church Street, Lavenham, Sudbury, CO10 9SA

During this 3 mile walk you will follow the route of the line and discover how the branch line operated, when it closed and it's legacy - a must for any rail enthusiast! £3 per person.

Tayfen Nature Reserve Quiz

When: 22nd May, 10am - 10.45am

Where: Bury Leisure Centre, Beetons Way, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3TT

An enjoyable free of charge 1.5 mile walk around Bury St Edmunds - be sure to keep your eyes open for the answers to the questions of the quiz!  

Nordic Walking the Clare Loop

When: 22nd May, 10am - 12pm

Where:  Clare Castle Country Park, Malting Lane, Clare, CO10 8NW

This 4.5 mile walk is for experience Nordic Walkers. or experienced Nordic Walkers, take in the fine views of the Town of Clare and Stour Valley and enjoy a light lunch at the Platform One Café in Clare Country Park, all for just £10.

An Ickworth Ramble

When: 23rd May, 2pm - 4pm

Where: Porters Lodge, Ickworth House, Horringer, Bury St Edmunds, IP29 5QE

Join 2 Park Rangers to explore some of the 1800 acres of Ickworth Park. Take in the estate's ever-changing landscapes and be inspired by ancient woodlands and pastoral fields. Tickets are £12.65 for non National Trust Members or £5 for National Trust Members.

Circular Walk from Nowton Park to Great Whelnetham

Where: 23rd May, 10am - 5pm

When: Nowton Park, Bury Road, Nowton, Bury Saint Edmunds, IP29 5LU

An 11-mile walk, leaving Nowton Park you start the walk passing an Artisan Bakery where you have the chance to grab a freshly baked pastry to sustain your efforts! Follow the St Edmunds Way to Great Whelnetham and the dismantled railway line at Little Whelnetham, stopping for a refreshment break at the Rushbrooke Arms pub before heading back to Nowton Park. £10 per person.

Old Broom Wood 

When: 25th May, 10.30am - 12.30pm

Where: Lackford Lakes Centre, Bury Saint Edmunds, IP28 6HX

A rare opportunity to enjoy a guided walk through this remarkable ancient woodland dotted with pollarded oaks aged between 250 to 500 years old and a remnant of an open wood-pasture landscape. The walk starts at Lackford Lakes, where you can enjoy a hot drink and a slice of cake before being taxied by minibus to Old Broom for the walk lasting approx 1 hour (2 hours in total). £7 per person.

Guided Walk Around Clare Castle Country Park

When: 26th May, 9.30am - 11.30am

Where: Clare Castle Country Park, Malting Lane, Clare, CO10 8NW

Clare Castle Country Park contains the remains of Clare Castle (a Scheduled Ancient Monument), the second oldest iron bridge in Suffolk, listed railway buildings dating from 1865, a ‘Railway Walk’, the medieval ‘New Cut’ of the River Stour and many natural heritage features in its 35 acres. The 4-mile walk, which costs £8, ends at the Platform One Café in the station house and includes a drink and a snack.

Iconic Images - Brecks Landscapes 

When: 26th May, 10am - 1pm

Location: West Stow Country Park, Icklingham Road, West Stow, Bury St Edmunds, IP28 6HG

Join Suffolk based photographer Phil Morley on this photography workshop; enabling you to capture the beauty of the Suffolk landscape. "Brecks Landscapes" will focus on the heathland and river scenery surrounding West Stow Country Park in the heart of The Brecks. £15 per person, booking early is advisable!

Santon Downham Walk 

When: 31st May, 10.30am - 1.30pm

Where: Forestry Car Park, Santon Downham, Brandon, IP27 0TJ

A 5.5 mile circular walk costs £10 per person and starts at Santon Downham and travelling along the beautiful River Little Ouse taking in the bat hibernaculum, the remains of St Helens Church and the bridge that was used in an episode of Dads Army. If Spring has fully sprung, you might even see the beautiful Rhodendendrons in flower.

Wild-Wood Crafting 

When: 2nd June, 10am - 12.30pm

Where:  Brandon Country Park, Bury Rd, Brandon, IP27 0SU

A fun activity for the whole family! Enjoy a guided 1-mile walk making things as you go from what you find, using natural materials such as; willow, sticks, leaves, grasses and rushes. £10 per person.

Tale of Two Rivers

When: 2nd June, 10am - 12pm

Where: Abbey Gardens (side gate), Mustow Street, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 1XL

A 2.5 mile walk, which follows part of the path set out in the best-selling guidebook written by the Bury Water Meadows Group "A Tale of Two Rivers". The walk is guided by a member of the group who are dedicated to conserving and improving the River Lark and its water meadows in Bury St Edmunds. £6.50 per person.
