Bury St Edmunds Hotel Reopens After Refurbishment

The Northgate has reopened after an extensive refurbishment of its entrance hall, restaurant, private dining room, Chef’s Table and cocktail bar.

The Northgate, a striking Victorian townhouse, situated in Bury St Edmunds has just undergone an extensive refurbishment of its entrance hall, restaurant, private dining room, Chef’s Table and cocktail bar. In just 8 days The Northgate was transformed into a fun, vibrant and most importantly, welcoming place for guests.

The ethos of The Chestnut Group, of which The Northgate sits within - a collection of pubs, inns and restaurants - aims to celebrate the very best of East Anglia and the heritage of each of their properties. The inhouse design team took inspiration from its Victorian past and combined murals and tiling with a contemporary twist. The building is awash with colour, which creates a greater sense of light and space. 


From the moment the guests enter through the yellow front door they are greeted by the stunning crane wallpaper, which is a reference to the breeding crane pairs which were reintroduced to East Anglia in the last 25 years and reflects the idea of new beginnings. As visitors wander down the corridor, they will come into the main restaurant where they will be met with a bespoke mural of peacocks, representing extravagance and elegance and a true status feature of Victorian gardens. The restaurant is also flooded with natural light, which makes it the perfect lunch time destination, whilst seeking drama through the lighting and colours for evening entertainment. The whole area has been given a modern makeover and the décor is in keeping with the food and service on offer – it is unique, contemporary, warm and in perfect taste. 


Explore a little further and guests will discover the monochrome cocktail bar, serving beautifully crafted cocktails, makes use of the geometric tiling scheme juxtaposed with a beautiful tree wallpaper, bringing the outside in and connecting this area with the terrace and garden just though the bar’s double doors. The walled garden terrace, the largest in Bury St Edmunds, has undergone a replanting scheme to include more colour and vibrance, whilst retaining its heritage trees. This carefully crafted setting is ideal for morning coffee, afternoon lounging and fabulous evenings to remember.


The private dining room, which in the past was merely an extension of the restaurant, is now an exciting and decadent dining room for special occasions. The memorable red walls complimented by the art and impressive chandelier give this room warmth and create a unique space for family, business, friends to meet and celebrate. The Northgate also hosts a series of experiences and workshops from their Taste of East Anglia Menu, Calligraphy & Cocktails, to Bar and Kitchen experiences.

The Northgate’s Head Chef Grieg Young is a true advocate of local seasonal East Anglian produce and it comes as no surprise that the menus truly reflect this. The current menu is full of East Anglia’s bountiful produce and ingredients, and even incorporates nasturtiums, green plums and cobnuts from its own garden – it doesn’t get more local than that!


The 10 chic bedrooms remain an oasis of calm upstairs, where guests can lay their weary heads for a welcome night’s sleep in comfort and luxury. They too maintain the Victorian period features of the building from the original fireplaces to the sash windows.

The overall feeling of The Northgate is of decadent urban living, where guests will feel at home the moment they enter, to enjoy a fun, high quality and memorable experience.
