Guide to Gluten-Free Dining in Bury St Edmunds & Beyond!

Check out these fantastic restaurants, cafes, eateries and bars in Bury St Edmunds who offer great gluten-free options!

Along with vegetarians and vegans, dining options for those who are coeliac or gluten intolerant have been extremely limited for many years. With the exception of the occasional restaurant or niche and specialist eatery, those who need gluten free food may have felt like dining included interrogation of waiting staff or asking to scrutinise ingredients lists on menus.

Thankfully, these days, many eating establishments have got serious about offering realistic (and delicious) options for those who wish or need to avoid gluten and such places are on the rise. Bury St Edmunds boasts a veritable smorgasbord of forward-thinking independent and family owned restaurants, cafes, eateries and bars which serve a great range of gluten-free meals and drinks!

We've picked a selection of eateries that provide either a separate gluten free menu or who have dishes that can be prepared gluten free clearly marked on their menus, making for an easy and enjoyable meal.

Ben's Restaurant

Bens is an award-winning restaurant in Bury St Edmunds with a focus on sourcing the highest quality local ingredients from independent Suffolk producers. Their meat is sourced from free-range Suffolk livestock, their game is seasonal and shot in Suffolk, supplied fresh and direct, and their fruit and veg is locally grown. They also raise their own Oxford Sandy and Black pigs and Jacob sheep.

The restaurant has some mouth-watering dishes created just for those who need to avoid Gluten, with some delicious evening options (available Tuesday – Saturday) ranging between Blythburgh pork belly bites with sweet chilli, shallot & balsamic tart tatin; whipped goats cheese and dressed rocket; smoked mackerel fillet, beetroot relish, horseradish crème fraiche and watercress for starters.

For mains; home-reared lamb, with boulangere potatoes, roasted parsnip, pea puree and red wine jus; pan roasted cod fillet served on a chorizo, tomato and haricot bean stew or Beef Bavette Steak, served rare with garlic butter, confit tomato, sauté mushrooms and hand-cut chips to name a few!

Casa is an intimate and bijoux restaurant with relaxed music, friendly staff and beautiful decor at the centre of the dining experience for their customers.

The restaurant, specialising in Tapas and Meze prides itself on catering for even the most challenging dietary requirements and offers a tantalising selection of gluten-free foods on their menu, including nibbles; Spanish almonds, olives or manchego cheese. Mains; chorizo in red wine; spiced chicken skewers; pork belly with Morrocan potatoes; whitebait with tartare sauce; Spanish tortilla; falafel with muhammara or halloumi with chermoula among many other options!

Gastrono-me is perfect for eating, drinking and unwinding. The restaurant is situated on Abbeygate Street and features south-facing windows which open entirely to let the beauty of historic Bury St Edmunds into the vibrant space of nooks and booths where you can enjoy the wonderful food.

The restaurant has a gluten-free menu available across the whole day – Breakfast, Brunch and Beyond! There's healthy granola, buck rarebit and smoked salmon for breakfast; Santa Fe bowl, Greek salad or wild mushrooms on toast for brunch and beef shin ragu with pappardelle or smoked salmon pate with onions and sprouted rye for the rest of the day!

The One Bull

The One Bull on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds is a rustic and stylish gastropub with a modern English menu that has a simple aim - to serve good food and drink at sensible prices in a relaxed, friendly and clean environment.

Their gluten-free menu includes options of four starters, six mains choices and eight different sides as well as desserts and cheese board. Choose from delectable devilled chicken livers or mussels in cream and white sauce to start and move on to sea trout fillet with new potatoes, spinach and bearnaise sauce or pomegranate glazed duck leg with puy lentil and winter vegetable stew - with sides to accompany which include; onion rings, steamed greens, coleslaw or roast carrots.

(The Winter gluten menu will be swapped to a Spring gluten menu in April 2019)

Edmundo Lounge

Edmundo Lounge sits just off the market square and in a building which has offered public dining and drinking for over 200 years! Sprawled across two floors, with off-shoot rooms and nooks and crannies where you can explore and find a place of your own to dine.

They offer a fantastic range of food and drinks (including full kids menu, vegetarian and vegan menus) served in the relaxed and comfy restaurant; complete with mismatched chairs, cosy sofas and eclectic furnishings.

Their gluten menu is truly extensive, offering clearly-marked ingredients. Breakfasts include the standard lounge breakfast, vegetarian breakfast, avocado brunch, halloumi hash and a good old sausage or bacon butty (served in a gluten-free roll). For the rest of the day, you can choose from salads (grilled halloumi and falafel or chicken, bacon and avocado), tapas (patatas bravas, smoked paprika pulled chicken and chorizo), burgers (Hero Burger, Beyond Vegan cheese burger or chicken burger) and lots more – steak, fish, sandwiches (GF bread), sides, puddings and Cakes.
