Trailer Released for New Dickens Movie Featuring Bury St Edmunds

Check out the first trailer for The Personal History of David Copperfield starring Dev Patel.

The long awaited European premiere of Armando Iannucci’s 'The Personal History of David Copperfield' opened the 63rd BFI London Film Festival last night (October 2) as the first trailer for the film went live.

The films stars Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie, Producer Kevin Loader, and Director Armando Iannucci were among those on the red carpet at London's Leicester Square for the film's premiere. The all-star cast also features  Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, and Peter Capaldi.

Filming took place on Angel Hill outside The Angel hotel, where Dickens stayed three times, The Athenaeum, where he did some of his readings, Athenaeum Lane, and in Crown Street and Chequer Square before moving to the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.

The first official photo released featured Dev Patel in costume in Churchgate Street, Bury St Edmunds.

Dickens, who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era, first stayed at The Angel in Bury St Edmunds in 1835 as a journalist for the Morning Chronicle (staying in what was then room 11).

In 1859 and 1861 he returned to The Angel to read to a captive audience at the nearby Athenaeum, staying in what is now room 215, now known as the Charles Dickens Suite (pictured below).

Bury St Edmunds and The Angel itself feature extensively in Dickens' novel 'The Pickwick Papers' and the town is again mentioned in his novel 'The Personal History of David Copperfield'.

From his diary, we know Dickens was very fond of Bury St Edmunds and its inhabitants. "Last night I read Copperfield at Bury St Edmunds to a very fine audience,” he wrote. “I don’t think a word – not to say an idea – was lost.”

The Personal History of David Copperfield is released in UK cinemas on January 10, 2020.
