Visit Bury's Hidden Gardens - Virtually!

Take a tour of Bury St Edmunds charming hidden gardens from the comfort of your own home...

Always a summer highlight, The Hidden Gardens of Bury St Edmunds sees 30 usually private plots across town open to the public in aid of St Nicholas Hospice. And, though this year’s physical event has been closed down by Covid-19, a virtual version is taking place instead, so visitors can still tour dozens of gardens and raise funds for the hospice in the process.

Among the gardeners showcasing their handiwork, via video footage, photos and blogs, is David, a paramedic who says gardening has been an invaluable source of solace in these challenging times; Steve, whose courtyard, with its tiers of potted plants and St Edmund-inspired sculpture, is proof even the most compact space can become a showstopper; and Ken, who advocates a weekly Guilt-free Day, when gardeners can down tools “and go out armed with bun and cuppa to do absolutely nothing except relax and listen to birds”.

“We are asking people who have enjoyed the blogs and virtual tours to make a donation in aid of St Nicholas Hospice,” adds George Chilvers, community fundraiser. “Usually the hidden garden events raise over £35,000 for the hospice and obviously Covid-19 has had a huge impact on our ability to raise vital funds.”
