About National Heritage Centre at Palace House Newmarket

The National Heritage Centre is situated in Charles II’s sporting palace and stables and spans five acres in the heart of Newmarket. It comprises three complementary attractions; a new National Horseracing Museum, a National Art Gallery of British Sporting Art, and a chance to meet former racehorses and learn what they do after racing, in the flagship home of Retraining of Racehorses.

In the old Trainer’s House and King’s Yard Galleries you will learn all there is to know about horseracing. From the 350 year of Royal connections to a day in the life of a jockey. A surprising element of the new Museum is the scientific gallery where you can compare your anatomy to a thoroughbred and learn why they are the ultimate athlete. Interactive and audio-visual displays allow visitors to engage with the displays in as much detail as they wish. If you are brave, you might have a go on our racehorse simulator and learn what it takes to be a jockey.

Moving through to the Rothschild Yard (the flagship yard for RoR) – you will have the opportunity to meet the heroes of the sport, the racehorse. Up to eight former racehorses are stabled here while they are retrained to go onto a new career after racing. Chat with our fantastic RoR (Retraining of Racehorses) staff and learn all you need to know about these wonderful creatures.

Situated in Palace House is the Fred Packard Museum & Galleries of British Sporting Art. Three floors of exquisite artwork have been beautifully curated to showcase five centuries of art from all sports. Here you will find paintings by John Wootton, Francis Hayman and George Stubbs rubbing shoulders with work from Sir Alfred Munnings, Mark Wallinger and Peter Blake.

The Tack Room serves delicious food throughout the day and the Palace House Shop stocks a diverse range of gifts to remind you of your visit.
